Rossiter for pain relief

​I am currently in Augusta, Georgia, learning some more Rossiter stretching workouts. This is pretty amazing, powerful stuff!
Rossiter combines the use of a smart foot with weight, with very specific movements to work on fascial tissue and creating space in the body to be able to move more freely. 
My goal is to increase awareness of Rossiter and it's awesome pain relieving techniques to New England. This is one type of bodywork that can be a tremendous help for people in pain. Everyone should be aware of it! It has been life changing for many people, giving them the ability to move again in ways they felt they never again would. Rossiter gives people hope. It challenges their beliefs about their own bodies, about the limitations they believe they have in their bodies, that they believe they cannot change. If you feel stuck in a painful body, don't give up! Give Rossiter a try. You just might be surprised!

Awareness of Body and Mind

How often do you become aware of some part of your body? When you step on something sharp? or when something hurts? Often I will ask a client when they felt they "did" something to make a body part hurt. Sometimes they can pinpoint exactly when they twisted an ankle or felt a muscle go in to spasm. Sometimes they don't remember doing anything at all! It just started hurting and for no reason they could discern! At least that's what it seems like to them. I think many of us had an experience like that, I know I have!

I'd like to hazard a guess though, that if we were in the practice of being more aware of our bodies on a regular basis, we might likely pick up subtle cues. We might notice that something isn't functioning quite right a lot sooner, adjust and prevent a repetitive movement injury. Usually, however, we wait until our body has had enough and needs to scream (excruciating pain!) to get our attention and care.

When was the last time you purposefully checked out how your body was feeling? If you meditate, or do yoga, perhaps you do this then, but consider doing it during the day while you are working or when you are running into the store or exercising at the gym.

Start today! Actually start right now! Let's start with a part our functioning that is very important, arguably the most important? You are probably sitting at the computer or using your mobile phone since you are reading this :) so focus your attention on your breathing. Just notice.

Are you breathing comfortably? Are you breathing through your nose or your mouth? Is there noise to your breathing? Scan your whole body while you sit and gently breath. Really bring focus on the parts of your body. What parts move?

Don't make judgement, not right now, just notice. Bring your focus to your face and jaw at the same time as you breath. Notice if there is any tension or tightness.

Now breath in deeply, feel what happens to your chest or your belly. 

Next, hold your breath. Notice what happens to your body? Is there tension anywhere?

You can continue to do different things with focus
  • breath all the air out and hold your breath. How long can you hold it?
  • If you breath in through your nose, now purposefully breath in through your mouth.  and if you breath in through your mouth, try to breath just though your nose. How does that compare?
  • Take quick shallow breaths or push the air out forcefully.
  • Or sigh! Sometimes I notice I'm sighing more than other times. It reminds me to take note of what's going on around me. Or whats going on within me.
​Now that you have done some focused breathing how do you feel overall?
​ 
Give attention to your breath more often throughout the day. You may find that how you feel, physically, mentally and emotionally can be connected to how you are breathing.

    ​I've done a lot of different jobs in my life.  I've finally settled on one.  sort of.  The thing about being a massage therapist and working with the human body is that there is so much to learn and so many ways to help people!  so it changes all the time, it's like having a new job every day!  this works for me.  I like change and new.
